Stroke width is the most important factor in determining how to light your channel letter signage.

  • Back lit (halo lit) letters at or under 6” stroke width only require a single row of LEDs down the middle of the letter to evenly illuminate. When wider than 6”, outline the letter to evenly distribute light.
  • Front lit (face lit) letters at or under 6” stroke and 5” letter depth can be lit with a single row down the middle of the letter. When wider than 5” up to 10” stroke width at 5” letter depth, two rows of LEDs evenly spaced in the letter will be needed to evenly illuminate letters.  For every 5” to 6” stroke width, an additional row of LEDs will be needed to light your letter evenly. For example, a letter with a 15” stroke would need 3 rows of LEDs.

That depends on which module you have. Using our most common 0.72-watt modules, a 60-watt driver can power a maximum of 83 modules. If you have our 1.08-watt modules, our 60-watt driver will power a maximum of 55 modules. Please refer to specific product pages on our website for more information on power supply loads.  

10000 K is a cooler bright white while 6500K is a natural toned white.

Kelvin Color Temperature Chart

If you have a national account, consider a 6500 Kelvin. Kelvin temperatures of 10,000 can wash out certain colors in a company's logo. GOQ LED America recommends 6500 Kelvin. You can use either the LUNA or CIRA products. Look for GOQ LED America part numbers that end in "-6500".

For example, if you are using a colored face, the 3WS072-6500 is a good solution for shallower depths. For deeper depths, 3WC072-6500 is a top seller.  Since colored LEDs are not defined with Kelvin temperatures, you can choose the color you need from our line of colored products.

GOQ LED America recommends a 10,000 Kelvin solution. For depths 5" or greater, try our 3WC072 module. If you have a shallow depth of 3", try our 3WS108

When a letter is too shallow for even illumination to the letter face, place the modules on the return wall of the letter rather than the back of the return. This will cause internal reflection, washing the color throughout the letter and illuminating the face evenly. This technique may not be applicable for a shallow depth letter with a wide stroke.

Using a wide-angle lens module, such as GOQLED America’s frosted 160-degree lens (SKU# 3WS108) or GOQLED America’s Spectrum 175-degree lens (SKU# C-2835-3WT072), will disperse the light output evenly. This creates an even lighting illumination and eliminates hotspots on depths as low as 3”.

Use the proper material for your sign face. Hotspots can be caused by using porous materials such as flex face and polycarbonate. When light passes through a sign face, acrylic material typically diffuses light better than polycarbonate material.

A common error is using the same LEDs in channel letters with 5” return as channel letters with 2” return. Please check your module specifications and recommendations. 

Our LUNA spectrum lens modules are designed with a 175-degree lens that will fit with applications just under 2” in depth!!

There is a direct relationship between viewing angle, stroke width, and channel letter depth. Light beams should cross paths before reaching the acrylic face or lens material.  A shallow letter will need a wider beam angle to spread light out evenly and prevent hot spotting. LEDs on the back return should not be close to or up against the seam of the return wall, as this could result in the beam reflecting off the return wall creating a hot glow around the face perimeter of the letter.

GOQ LED America provides a Mini 1-diode (SKU# M-1WS036) that works effectively at 2” letter depth applications. For 3” depth GOQ LED America has a premium CIRA frosted 160-degree lens module (SKU# 3WS108) or economical LUNA spectrum 175-degree lens module (SKU# C-2835-3WT072). At 5” depth our clear lens modules, premium CIRA (3WC072) or economical LUNA (C-2835-3WC072), are recommended.

When repairing or replacing a letter in an existing sign, make sure to match the coil color finish. Match matte letter sets with matte finish and satin letter sets with satin finish. Mixing the coil finish will affect the illumination of your sign. Also, if the inside of your sign is dirty, dusty, or rusty, take a few minutes to clean and repaint it white to get the brightest shine out of your internally illuminated sign.

Voltage Drop is represented by Ohm’s Law V=IR.

V= Voltage

I= Amps

R= Resistance

In DC circuits, voltage gradually drops as it travels through wire. So, with every foot of wire, the available voltage to each foot gradually decreases. This leads to one end of your lights having higher voltage and can be brighter than the other end.

Tips on how to avoid Voltage Drop in LEDs:

  • Divide long runs of LEDs into shorter runs. Connect additional “parallel” wires from the power supply to each LED run.
  • Longer runs of LEDs 50ft or more, we recommend powering from the middle point so that power is evenly distributed.
  • We do not recommend daisy chaining more than 50ft of LEDs together.
  • The industry standard for best results is to buffer your circuit with a 10% to 20% margin.

This will protect your system, making it safer and last longer.

Divide long runs of LEDs into shorter runs. Connect additional “parallel” wires from the power supply to each LED run. If you’re running 50 feet of LEDs, we recommend you power from each end so the maximum distance from the power supply is 25ft. We do not recommend daisy chaining more than 50ft of LEDs together.

Yes, our LED modules are capable of dimming.  We recommend purchasing a dimmer from the internet that will work with your 12-volt operating system.  Please call if you need more assistance.

At this time GOQ LED America does not offer any type of rope lighting or LED sticks.  We do offer perimeter edge modules in place of sticks.

Our LEDs are IP68 and can be exposed.  We always recommend protecting the wire ends and the wire in between modules.

Do not overpower your power supplies. A power supply that can’t handle the load leads to faulty lighting, blinking of the letters, or no power at all. To figure out your power supply needs, refer to this chart.
